I wonder, “Why do clients insist on doing more than necessary?” Why do they need to “fix” the therapist? Why don’t they get their point across in their own way, in their own time, and in their own way, through their own means and in their own time? And why must they keep appearing at the table? We might call this, “the process of therapy.” Instead of the therapist being a passive listener, he or she becomes active, countering what is argued for and debating on the validity of the opinions offered. In short, difficult clients are the clients, who insist on being the client-leaving it to the therapist to do the work. But, having to ask for their attention, reply to their questions, counter their insistence and get them to meet commitments they have made-that’s work for the client and the therapist. They think they are doing it right, and they should. But I think that one reason clients are difficult is because they are doing more of the work than necessary.
